Traditionally known as the Peterson Mansion, this house was built in 1903 for Swedish immigrant and early Missoula Pharmacist Gustav Peterson. The versatile Montana Architect A. J. Gibson designed this home, along with over 150 private and public buildings during the late 19th and early 20th centuries including the Daly Mansion near Hamilton, MT, the Missoula County Courthouse, Main Hall at the U of M, and many local family mansions. This house is a stylistic hybrid. It is essentially a rather sober interpretation of the grand Queen Anne style, usually identified with the late 19th century. The interiors asymmetrical floor plan, parlor, and pocket doors are typical Queen Anne features. To update the Queen Anne design, Gibson added the imposing Roman Revival Porch that gives the exterior an overall neoclassical impression. The design also includes Georgian Revival motifs, such as the Palladian window in the Parlor.
In 1979 Gibson Mansion was relocated to its current address. Since then the mansion has been slowly restored to the 1900's atmosphere. All four guest rooms have iron beds, oak armoires, and period décor. They also feature in-room TV/VCR's, private baths, High Speed Wireless Internet, and phone access for your comfort and convenience.
Exquisite original antique leaded stained glass windows and hard wood floors welcome you upon entry. The Reception hall hosts you with traditional teas and coffee round the clock. Temptingly delicious home baked cookies and "goodies" are served every afternoon.
The adjoining Library may intrigue your mind with a good book, a game of chess, or interesting conversation.
Highlighting the Parlor is the ornate cast iron fireplace and large leaded, beveled glass windows. Here you can relax by the fire or soak in the southern sunrays, a pleasure any time of year.
The Grand oak staircase invites you up to your private air conditioned quarters, where blended beauty, comfort, and cleanliness are the perfect formula for rest and relaxation.
